Group settings
Manage a TACENZA Chat group – name and picture, what members can do, slow mode, disappearing messages, protected content, rules, onboarding and ownership.
Every group has its own set of pages under Manage group. What you see there depends on your role: members see the overview, members, channels, roles and settings, while invite links, moderation and the directory appear only to people allowed to use them. The server enforces every rule, whatever the app shows. This page covers the settings; roles are in Roles and permissions and moderation in Moderation.
Open Manage group
- Open the group chat.
- Open the Details panel from the chat header.
- Choose Manage group.
The pages are Overview, Members, Channels, Roles, Invite links, Settings, Moderation and Directory.
Overview
The group’s description, member and channel count, and facts such as disappearing messages or slow mode. Here you’ll also find:
- Just for you – notifications, mute, pin and archive for this chat. Only you see these.
- Content – shared content, pinned messages and events.
- Ownership – for the owner, see below.
- Leave or delete – leave the group, or delete it if you’re the owner.
Settings
Name and picture
Change the group’s picture, Group name (up to 60 characters) and Description (up to 300 characters), then choose Save name and picture. All three are encrypted, so only members can read them. The owner, admins and members allowed to edit group info can change them.
What members can do
The owner and admins switch these basic permissions on or off for members:
- Send messages
- Send photos and files
- Add members
- Change group info
Admins can always do everything. For finer control, use roles and channel overrides – see Roles and permissions.
Slow mode sets how often each member can send a message: every 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes or 1 hour. Admins aren’t limited, and neither are members allowed to delete others’ messages. The server keeps the last send time in memory only.
Disappearing messages and protected content
The owner and admins set:
- Disappearing messages – new messages disappear after 5 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day or 7 days.
- Protected content – no saving, copying or forwarding, with Watermark photos and Only readable in the desktop app.
See Privacy and safety settings for what these can and can’t do.
Group profile and settings
- Appearance – a banner and a group colour.
- Rules – the group’s rules, up to 2,000 characters, encrypted like the rest of the group’s info.
- Link previews by default – whether links show a preview card in this group.
Onboarding
Turn on New members complete a welcome first to greet people who join. Until they finish, they can read but not post. Members who joined earlier aren’t affected.
- Welcome text – what new members see first.
- Rules to accept – one per line, up to 10. Each becomes a checkbox new members tick.
- Roles to choose from – roles members can pick themselves, such as interests or pronouns. Give such roles no permissions.
Ownership
Every group has one owner, who can do everything, including deleting the group.
- Go to Manage group › Overview.
- Under Ownership, pick a member in Transfer to.
- Choose Transfer ownership and confirm.
The new owner can do everything you can. You stay on as an admin.
Only the new owner can give ownership back. If you leave as the owner, the group is handed to an admin. To end the group for everyone, choose Delete group – that deletes every message and file for everyone and can’t be undone.
List the group in Discover
The Directory page lists a group publicly in Discover. It’s covered in Groups.
