Messages not sending or opening

Fixes for TACENZA Chat messages that won't send, files that are refused, and messages or groups you can't read yet.

When a message won’t send or won’t open in TACENZA Chat, the app almost always says why. This page lists those messages and what to do. Because everything is encrypted on your device, the server can’t look into a message to help – but most causes are simple.

A message says “Not sent”

  1. Look for Offline – reconnecting… at the top. Tacenza reconnects by itself; wait until it’s gone.
  2. Select Retry on the message.
  3. If it still fails, reload the page. Unless Stay signed in on this device is on, you’ll need to log in again.

Messages the app shows

“Too many attempts. Try again in … s.”

You sent a lot in a short time. Wait for the time shown. The same limits apply on every plan.

“Slow mode is on. Wait … s.”

The group’s admins have set slow mode. You can send again after the wait.

“Only admins can send messages in this group.”

The group, or this channel, is read-only for members. “Only admins can send photos and files in this group.” means the same for files. See Roles and permissions.

“Tacenza is very busy right now. Try again in … s.”

The server is under heavy load. Wait and try again. Check the status page if it keeps happening.

Files and photos

“Files can be up to … MB on your plan.”

Each plan has a largest attachment: 25 MB on Free, 100 MB on Plus and 500 MB on Pro. Send a smaller file, or see Plans and billing.

“Your storage is full”

Your files are safe, but new uploads are paused. Delete messages with attachments to free space, or upgrade. Settings › Storage shows what you use.

“This conversation has no room left for attachments.”

Deleting older messages with attachments in that conversation frees space.

Messages you can’t read

“You’ve joined. Messages open as soon as a member who’s online shares the group’s keys with you.”

Group keys are handed over by members’ devices, not by the server. The messages open when a member who’s online shares them. You’ll only see what’s sent after you joined.

“The key for this conversation couldn’t be unlocked.”

Reload and log in again. If it stays, contact support and say which kind of chat it is (1:1 or group). Never send your password or recovery key.

“Protected – open in the desktop app”

The chat is protected and set to be readable only in the TACENZA desktop app, which keeps it out of screenshots. You can still send messages from the browser. Select Download for Windows to get the app.

They didn’t get it

  • Blocked: if they’ve blocked you, they won’t see your messages. Tacenza doesn’t tell you.
  • Message requests: your first message to someone new waits in their requests until they accept it.
  • Groups: someone who won’t be added to groups needs an invite link instead.
  • Key changed: if you see “The key for … has changed”, compare safety numbers before writing anything sensitive. See Codes and verification.
