Messaging

Everything you send in TACENZA Chat – text, photos, files, voice messages and locations – is encrypted on your device before it leaves it. This page covers what you can send and what you can do with a message afterwards. Most actions are in the message’s options: hover over a message, right-click it, or tap and hold on a phone.

What you can send

Text, up to 4,000 characters per message. Mention someone by typing @.
Photos. Re-encoded on your device before they’re sent, which strips hidden data such as GPS position. Choose Standard (1280 px) or High (2048 px) quality in Settings › Messages.
Files. The largest attachment depends on your plan: 25 MB on Free, 100 MB on Plus and 500 MB on Pro.
Voice messages. Choose the microphone button in the message box to record.
Location. Under Attach, choose Send current location, or Enter a location to paste coordinates or a map link when your device can’t find its position. No map is fetched to show it.
Live location. Share where you are with people you pick, for 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours or Until I stop. Only those people can decrypt it, and sharing pauses while TACENZA is closed.
Contact cards. Share someone’s username with Attach › Contact.

Attachments are padded before they’re encrypted, so the server can’t tell a photo from a file or a location, and learns less about their size.

Replies, reactions and threads

Reply quotes the message you’re answering.
React adds an emoji to a message. Reactions are end-to-end encrypted like messages.
Reply in thread (groups only) starts a thread under a message, so a side conversation doesn’t fill the chat.

Editing and deleting

Edit changes a text message you sent, or the caption of your photo or file. Others see that it was edited and can open Edit history, which is end-to-end encrypted like the message. Press ↑ in an empty message box to edit your last message.
Delete for everyone removes your own message from the server. This can’t be undone.
In groups, members with the right permission can delete others’ messages as moderators.

To delete a whole 1:1 chat, open its details panel and choose Delete chat. It’s deleted for both of you.

Pinning, saving and bookmarks

Pin keeps a message at the top of the chat. A chat can have up to 50 pinned messages.
Save to Saved messages copies a message into your own private chat, where you can also write notes to yourself.
Bookmark marks a message so you can find it later on the Saved page. Bookmarks can have categories and stay private to you. You can have up to 300.

Forwarding and copying

Forward, Copy text and Save to device are available unless the chat has protected content on – see Protected content. Choose Select to forward, copy or delete several messages at once.

Links and translation

Link previews show the site and address under a link. They’re made on your device from the address alone, so nothing is fetched and the site never learns who reads it.
Fetch previews for links I send is an opt-in in Settings › Privacy Center. When it’s on, the TACENZA server fetches the page of a link you send and puts its title, text and a small picture inside your encrypted message.
Translate appears only where your browser can translate on your device. The text never leaves your device.

Disappearing messages

A chat can make new messages disappear after 5 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day or 7 days. The server deletes them when time is up. See Disappearing messages.

When a message won’t send

A message that couldn’t be sent shows Not sent, with Retry and Discard. Slow mode, a timeout or missing permissions in a group can also stop you sending. See My messages aren’t sending.
