Reading mail
How folders, the message list, conversations and the reading pane work in TACENZA Mail, and how HTML mail and images from the internet are shown.
This page covers reading mail in the TACENZA Mail web app: the folders in the sidebar, the message list, conversations, and how the reading pane shows HTML mail safely. For sorting mail in a shared inbox, see Folders, shared addresses and assigning.
Folders
Your folders are in the sidebar, in a fixed order: Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Archive, Spam and Trash, then any others alphabetically. A number next to a folder is how many unread messages it has. Sent and Drafts don’t show a count.
Shared addresses you have, like support@, appear under Shared with their own Inbox, Drafts, Sent and Trash.
Making, renaming or moving mail between your own folders isn’t in the web app yet.
The message list
Select a folder to see its mail. Each row shows who’s in the conversation, the date, the subject and the first line. A paperclip means there are files. A number next to the names is how many messages the conversation has. Unread conversations stand out.
- The list shows the newest 50 conversations in a folder. Older mail isn’t listed yet; use search (Searching your mail) or a mail app over IMAP to reach it.
- The list doesn’t update on its own. Select Refresh at the top to check for new mail.
- Encrypted mail shows Encrypted message instead of the first line, because the server can’t read it. See Privacy and encryption in Mail.
Conversations
Replies are grouped with the message they answer. Opening a conversation shows its messages oldest first. The newest one and any unread ones are open; the rest are folded to one line. Select a folded line to open it, or use Open all and Fold older.
Opening a conversation marks it as read.
Actions
At the top of a conversation:
- Reply answers the newest message. Each message also has its own Reply.
- Mark unread marks the newest message unread and closes the conversation.
- Delete moves the whole conversation, your replies included, to Trash.
Mail in Trash, Spam and Drafts doesn’t appear inside conversations in other folders.
There’s no button to empty Trash or delete mail for good in the web app yet.
How HTML mail is shown
HTML mail is shown as the sender designed it, on a white background in both themes. It’s cleaned first and shown in a locked frame where nothing in it can run.
Images from the internet
Images the mail loads from the internet stay hidden. Loading them tells the sender that you opened the mail, and roughly where you are. When a message has them, you’ll see a notice with Show images. Select it to load them for that message only.
Images sent inside the mail itself show right away, because loading them tells nobody anything.
Files
Files in a message are listed above the text with their size. Select one to download it. See Attachments.
Reporting a message
Every message you received has a Report button, except in Sent and Drafts. See Privacy and encryption in Mail.
