Password, recovery key and two-factor sign-in

How to change your TACENZA Chat password, make a new recovery key, turn on two-factor sign-in and keep a sign-in history.

Your TACENZA Chat account is a username and a password. Your password also unlocks your keys, so nobody can reset it for you – not even us. This page covers changing your password, your recovery key, two-factor sign-in and the sign-in history. For devices and staying signed in, see Sessions and devices.

Your password

Your password never leaves your device in a form the server could use to read your messages. That’s why we can’t reset it.

Change your password

  1. Go to Settings › Account.
  2. Under Change password, enter your Current password, then the New password twice. Use at least 10 characters; a sentence is easier to remember.
  3. Select Change password.

Every other device is logged out. They need the new password to log in again.

Your recovery key

When you create an account, your device makes a recovery key and shows it once. It’s 14 groups of 4 letters and digits. We never have it.

  • If you forget your password, the recovery key lets you set a new one yourself. See Getting back into your account.
  • Anyone who has it can take over your account. Keep it private, in a password manager or on paper.

Make a new recovery key

Do this if you’ve lost yours or think someone has seen it.

  1. Go to Settings › Account.
  2. Under Recovery key, select Make a new recovery key and enter your Current password.
  3. Save the new key. The old one stops working at once.
Warning

Without your password or your recovery key, nobody can open your account. The recovery key is the only way to set a new password, and nobody can reset it for you, including us.

Two-factor sign-in

With two-factor sign-in on, logging in needs your password and a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone. It’s off by default.

Turn it on

  1. Go to Settings › Security Center.
  2. Under Two-factor sign-in, select Turn on and enter your Current password.
  3. Scan the QR code with any authenticator app that supports standard 6-digit codes. Can’t scan it? Enter the key shown instead, or select Open in app.
  4. Enter the Code from the app and select Turn on.

The server keeps a secret for checking your codes, sealed with its own key.

Turn it off

Select Turn off, enter your current password and a code, and confirm. Without it, anyone with your password can log in.

Lost your phone?

Reset your password with your recovery key. That also turns two-factor sign-in off. See Two-factor codes aren’t working.

Sign-in history

A list of recent logins to your account: when, and on which of your devices. It’s off by default.

  1. Go to Settings › Devices.
  2. Turn on Keep a sign-in history.

The server keeps the time and a random device id for your last 50 logins. Never an IP address, a place or a browser. Device names come from your encrypted account. A login marked another device was signed out happened when you were at your device limit.

Turning it off deletes the list.

Security Center

Settings › Security Center starts with a checklist: whether you’ve saved a recovery key, whether all your devices have names, changed keys in your chats, unverified safety numbers, and screenshot protection. Items that need attention have a Fix or Review link.

It also has Log out when inactive: Never, After 5 minutes, After 15 minutes or After 1 hour. See Sessions and devices.

For safety numbers, see Privacy and safety settings and Codes and verification.
