Privacy settings
What each setting in the TACENZA Chat Privacy Center does and what it lets others learn – profile, read receipts, typing, online status and blocking.
TACENZA Chat never sees your messages, profile or contacts, whatever you choose. The settings in the Privacy Center decide what other people can learn about you. Each one says what it does and, with an eye icon, what it reveals. This page walks through them. For what the server itself stores, see What the server stores.
Open Settings › Privacy Center.
Your profile
- Share my profile: your picture, bio and links. Turning it off gives your profile a new key, so nobody can read it any more, including people who could before.
- Profile visibility: select Who can see to choose who sees your photo, bio, links, status and groups in common.
- Status: who sees the status you set – Everyone, Contacts or Nobody. Your status is only what you set yourself; nothing is detected.
“Everyone” means everyone you talk to. Contacts are people you’ve written to or accepted. “Nobody” means it stays on your devices. See Profiles.
Activity
- Read receipts: in 1:1 chats, let people know you’ve read their messages. You see theirs only while you send yours. They’re sent as encrypted messages.
- Typing indicators: show that you’re typing. The server passes this on to the chat’s members without keeping it.
- Live location: shows who you’re sharing with, and lets you start or change sharing.
- Online & last seen: off by default. Shows whether you’re online, and when you were last here, to people you have a 1:1 chat with who share theirs too. With it on, the server keeps when you were last here, to the minute. Turning it off deletes that.
Who can reach you
- Message requests: chats from people you haven’t written to go into a separate folder until you accept. They can’t see whether you’ve read them.
- Who can add me to groups: Everyone, or Nobody – only invite links. The server enforces this, so it’s stored as a plain setting.
- Link previews: shows the site and address under a link, made on your device. Nothing is fetched.
- Fetch previews for links I send: off by default. With it on, the server fetches the page of a link you send and puts a preview inside your encrypted message. The server sees the link while fetching it and keeps nothing.
Screen protection
Hide every chat when the app isn’t in focus blurs all chats, not just protected ones, when you switch away. A web page can’t block screenshots; the TACENZA desktop app can.
Blocked users
Blocked people are listed here. Select Unblock to undo it.
When you block someone, they can’t message you, and you won’t see their messages in groups. They aren’t told. Blocking happens on your device: the server never learns whom you block.
Email and phone
An email address or phone number you add in Settings › Account stays in your encrypted vault. The server can’t read it, it isn’t shown on your profile, and nobody can search for you by it. Tacenza never uses it. See Account settings.
Opt-ins that tell the server more
These are all off until you turn them on, and each says what it reveals where you do:
- online & last seen (above);
- two-factor sign-in and sign-in history (Password, recovery key and two-factor sign-in);
- push and email notifications (Notification settings).
Turning one off deletes what it stored.
