Deleting your account

How to delete your TACENZA Chat account, what is deleted and what stays, what happens to a subscription, and what to save first.

You can delete your TACENZA Chat account at any time in Settings. It’s permanent: nobody can undo it, including us. This page explains what’s deleted, what happens to groups and subscriptions, and what to save before you go.

Warning

Deleting your account can’t be undone. Your keys are deleted, so nothing in the account can ever be opened again.

Before you delete

  • Export what you want to keep. Settings › Advanced › Encrypted export saves your settings, bookmarks, blocked people, contacts’ pinned keys and chat preferences. It doesn’t contain messages. See Account settings.
  • Save photos and files you want from your chats. Messages can’t be exported.
  • Hand over groups you own, if you’d like to choose the new owner yourself (Group settings).
  • Cancelling isn’t needed first. Deleting the account ends your subscription.

Delete your account

  1. Go to Settings › Account.
  2. Under Delete account, select Delete account.
  3. Read the confirmation – “Delete your account for good? Your keys and 1:1 chats are deleted, and you leave every group.” – and confirm.

You’re logged out on every device.

What’s deleted

  • your keys, profile, settings and encrypted account data;
  • your 1:1 chats and their messages, for both of you;
  • your devices and sessions;
  • any opt-in data, such as your two-factor secret, sign-in history and the address for email notifications.

What happens elsewhere

  • Groups: you leave every group, and the group gets new keys. If you owned one, it’s handed to an admin, or to another member if there’s no admin. A group where you were the only member is deleted.
  • Messages you sent in groups stay in those groups.
  • Bots you created stop working: their tokens are deleted with your account.

Your subscription

If you pay for Plus or Pro, deleting your account deletes your Stripe customer first, which ends the subscription at once. You aren’t charged again.

If Stripe can’t be reached at that moment, the deletion is refused rather than risk charging you for an account that no longer exists. Try again a little later.

Invoice records are kept for bookkeeping, no longer linked to any account. See Plans and billing.

Inactive accounts

Accounts nobody logs in to for 6 months are deleted. Logging in, or keeping Tacenza open, counts. Accounts with a running paid subscription aren’t deleted for inactivity.

TACENZA Mail is separate

Deleting your Chat account doesn’t touch a TACENZA Mail account, and the other way round. There’s no button to delete a Mail account yourself yet. A company’s admin can remove a person in Team settings, which deletes their mailbox and all its mail (Mail settings).
