Create a TACENZA Chat account

Claim a username, choose a password and save your recovery key. What the username rules are, and how the launch claim period works.

Creating a TACENZA Chat account – “claiming a name” – takes a username, a password and about a minute. You don’t give an email address or a phone number. At the end, your device makes a recovery key, which is the only way back in if you forget your password.

Create your account

  1. Open TACENZA Chat and choose Create account.
  2. Type the username you want. The app checks the rules as you type and tells you whether the name is free.
  3. Choose a password of at least 10 characters and type it again under Repeat password. A sentence is easier to remember than a jumble.
  4. If the app asks for an Invite code, enter one (see The claim period below).
  5. Choose Claim @yourname. While it says “Checking this device…”, your device does a short sign-up check instead of a CAPTCHA. It takes about a second, a little longer on phones.
  6. Your recovery key appears. Save it – see the next section.
  7. Tick I’ve saved my recovery key somewhere safe. and choose Continue.
  8. You’ll see your claim number and claim card. Choose Open Tacenza to start.

Your recovery key

Your device makes the recovery key at sign-up and shows it once. It’s 14 groups of 4 letters and digits. Use Copy or Download to keep it, and store it somewhere private, such as a password manager or on paper.

  • If you forget your password, the recovery key lets you set a new one yourself.
  • Nobody else can reset your password – not even TACENZA. We never have your password or your recovery key.
  • Anyone who has your recovery key can take over your account, so keep it private.
Warning

If you lose both your password and your recovery key, your account can’t be opened by anyone, including us. You can make a new recovery key at any time in Settings › Account while you still know your password.

Username rules

New usernames must:

  • be 3 to 24 characters long;
  • use only lowercase letters a–z, numbers, and . _ -;
  • start and end with a letter or a number;
  • never have two of . _ - in a row.

These rules make every name valid as the part of an email address before the @, for TACENZA Mail later.

Some names can’t be claimed:

  • Reserved names, such as tacenza, admin, support or security.
  • Look-alikes of a name that’s taken or reserved. adm1n is refused like admin, because the two look the same.
  • Short names of 4 characters or fewer. These open in later waves.

Accounts made before these rules keep the names they have.

Changing your username

Renaming isn’t available yet. The claim rules say renaming will be free until TACENZA Mail launches, but the rename feature hasn’t been built. See Change my username.

The claim period

Names are being claimed during a launch “claim” period.

  • Invite codes. Each device can claim one name for free. Claiming another from the same device needs an invite code, and at times claiming may be invite-only for everyone. Each account can make 3 invite codes in Settings › Plan › Your claim. TACENZA counts how many codes are used, never who made or used them.
  • Claim numbers. Every account gets a claim number. Only the total number of claims is published.
  • Expiry. A claim expires after 6 months without a login. Logging in, or keeping TACENZA open, renews it. Accounts with a running paid subscription don’t expire. Your current expiry date is in Settings › Plan.
  • No reuse. Once TACENZA Mail exists, names are never given out again, not even after they expire, so nobody can receive mail meant for someone else.
